Sora Is Shutting Down: 5 Best Sora Alternatives (2026)

September 19, 2026 • By Bank K.

If you still have Sora prompts in a notes app or Sora calls in your code, you have a few days left. OpenAI is shutting Sora down, and the last piece of it, the API, goes dark on September 24, 2026. This post covers exactly what is closing and when, which Sora alternatives are worth your time, and how to rewrite your Sora prompts so they work on Veo 3.1, Kling 3.0, Seedance, and Hailuo instead of producing a worse copy of the same clip.

What Is Actually Shutting Down (and When)

OpenAI announced the Sora discontinuation on March 24, 2026. It happened in two stages:

WhatShutdown dateStatus today (Sept 19, 2026)
Sora app (iOS/Android) and Sora on the web (sora.chatgpt.com)April 26, 2026Already closed
Sora API: the Videos API and the sora-2 / sora-2-pro models and snapshotsSeptember 24, 2026Closing in 5 days

The API dates come straight from OpenAI’s API deprecations page, which says developers were notified on March 24, 2026 of the removal of the Videos API and the Sora 2 model aliases and snapshots on September 24, 2026. That page lists no replacement model. OpenAI has not announced a new video model to take Sora’s place.

What happens to your existing videos. According to OpenAI’s Sora discontinuation help article, users could export their content from sora.chatgpt.com/sunset before the cutoff. After Sora is discontinued and after any final export window passes, OpenAI says it will permanently delete data associated with Sora. OpenAI also said it had not decided whether a final export window would be offered, and that it would email users first if one is. I could not find a confirmed announcement of a final window, so if you are an app user who missed April 26, check your email for a notice from OpenAI and don’t count on getting your library back.

If you use the API, the practical rule is simple: download every video file you still need and stop depending on sora-2 before September 24.

Why it closed: OpenAI did not give a detailed reason in its notice. Reporting from outlets like NBC News and Axios pointed to the cost of running video generation and falling usage after the launch spike.

The 5 Best Sora Alternatives Right Now

Every model below generates video with native audio, so you don’t lose the thing that made Sora 2 feel new. The differences are clip length, how each one reads a prompt, and what you pay.

Some notes that matter when you choose:

  • Veo 3.1 is the closest replacement for Sora’s “cinematic clip with sound” use. The catch is the short base clip. The Gemini API docs list 4, 6, or 8 second durations, with 8 seconds required for 1080p, 4K, reference images, or extension. If you made 12 second Sora 2 clips, plan on extending or cutting.
  • Kling 3.0 launched in February 2026 and generates 3 to 15 seconds in one go, with a custom multi-shot mode where you write each shot yourself. Its native audio covers Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.
  • Seedance 2.0 came out in February 2026 and takes image, video, and audio references in the same prompt. ByteDance launched Seedance 2.5 on July 31, 2026 with 30 second single-pass clips and up to 50 references (30 images, 10 videos, 10 audio clips). Availability varies by region, so check before you commit.
  • Hailuo 3.0, which MiniMax calls MiniMax H3, launched July 31, 2026 with 2K output up to 15 seconds and native stereo audio.
  • Gemini Omni Flash was announced at Google I/O 2026 and is free for YouTube Shorts creators, which makes it worth trying if Shorts is your main channel.

A reality check on rankings: on the Artificial Analysis text-to-video leaderboard (blind votes, with audio), checked September 19, 2026, the top spots belong to Gemini Omni Flash, Alibaba’s Wan 3.0, and MiniMax H3, with Seedance 2.0 in fifth. Kling 3.0 and Veo 3.1 sit lower, around 12th and 14th. Leaderboards measure general preference on random prompts, not your niche, so use them to decide what to test, not what to pay for. Wan 3.0 is worth a test too; I left it out of the table because I couldn’t confirm its clip length and pricing from an official page.

Prices change every few weeks. Treat the table as a starting point and confirm on each platform before you budget a project.

Translate Your Sora Prompt: 3 Real Before-and-After Rewrites

Sora 2 was forgiving. You could write a loose paragraph, mention a sound, and it filled in the rest. The replacement models are more literal, and each one has its own way of reading structure, dialogue, and sound. Pasting a Sora prompt unchanged usually works, but you leave quality on the table.

Here are the main differences in one place:

  • Veo 3.1 wants the camera first. Google’s own Veo 3.1 prompting guide recommends Cinematography + Subject + Action + Context + Style and Ambiance, dialogue in quotation marks, and labeled SFX: and Ambient noise: lines. It also accepts timestamped shots like [00:00-00:02].
  • Kling 3.0 reads shots as a list (“Shot 1, … Shot 2, …”) and dialogue as Name (tone): line. Name the camera move plainly.
  • Seedance is built around references. You upload images, video, or audio and point to them inside the prompt with @Image 1, @Video 1, and so on.
  • Hailuo (on the MiniMax API for Hailuo 02 and 2.3) accepts bracketed camera commands such as [Push in], [Pan left], [Tracking shot], and [Static shot].

Rewrite 1: The viral CCTV clip

This is the kind of prompt that did well on Sora’s feed and still does well on Shorts and Reels.

Sora-style original:

security cam footage of a big brown dog protecting his owner from a guy in a hoodie in an alley at night, dog growls, owner is scared, grainy

Veo 3.1 version (camera first, sound on labeled lines):

Static high-angle CCTV security camera shot of a dim alleyway at night, faint orange streetlight. A young woman in a red jacket stands frozen as a stranger in a black hoodie walks toward her. Her large brown dog steps between them, fur raised, body low and braced. Grainy surveillance footage, timestamp overlay in the corner, slight compression blockiness.
SFX: a low, rumbling dog growl, slow footsteps on wet pavement.
Ambient noise: distant traffic hum, buzzing streetlight.

Kling 3.0 version (15 seconds, two shots, clear camera statement):

Shot 1, fixed CCTV security camera angle from above, dim alleyway at night, a young woman in a red jacket walks home with her large brown dog on a leash. A stranger in a black hoodie steps out of a doorway ahead.
Shot 2, same fixed CCTV angle, the dog moves in front of the woman, fur standing up, growling low as the stranger stops and backs away slowly. Grainy low-light security footage, no camera movement.

Seedance version (use a photo of your own dog as the reference):

CCTV security camera footage of a dim alleyway at night. The dog from @Image 1 walks beside its owner, a young woman in a red jacket. A stranger in a black hoodie approaches; the dog from @Image 1 plants itself between them and growls, fur raised, until the stranger turns away. Static high-angle surveillance view, grainy, low light, faint streetlight flicker. Low growl and footsteps.

What changed: Veo got the shot type first and audio split out. Kling got the story split into two shots, which lets you use its 15 second length. Seedance got a reference, which is how you keep “your” dog consistent across a series. If this niche is your thing, the CCTV security camera prompts page has more starting points.

Rewrite 2: A talking street interview

Sora 2 handled a spoken line if you just wrote it in. Veo and Kling each have a stricter dialogue format.

Sora-style original:

street interview in times square, reporter asks a guy what he thinks of AI and he says honestly i just want it to do my laundry, handheld, funny

Veo 3.1 version:

Handheld medium close-up, street interview style, Times Square at dusk with blurred crowds and billboards behind. A reporter holds a microphone toward a man in his 30s wearing a gray beanie. The reporter asks, "What do you think about AI?" The man shrugs and says, "Honestly? I just want it to do my laundry." Natural, slightly shaky phone footage.
Ambient noise: city crowd chatter, car horns in the distance.

Kling 3.0 version:

Handheld phone camera, medium close-up, street interview in Times Square at dusk, crowds and billboards blurred behind. A reporter holds a microphone to a man in a gray beanie.
Reporter (upbeat, American accent): What do you think about AI?
Man (deadpan, then grinning): Honestly? I just want it to do my laundry.
Slight camera shake, natural city light.

Hailuo version (bracketed camera command):

[Static shot] Street interview in Times Square at dusk, handheld phone look. A reporter holds a microphone to a man in a gray beanie who shrugs and answers with a deadpan face, then grins. Blurred crowds and bright billboards behind them. [Push in] slowly on the man's face as he grins.

Keep lines short. A two-line exchange fits an 8 second Veo clip; a paragraph of dialogue does not. The street interview prompts page has more setups in this format.

Rewrite 3: A three-shot scene in one generation

Sora 2 could do multi-shot scenes if you labeled them. Each replacement handles this differently.

Sora-style original:

Shot 1: wide shot of a small bakery at dawn, warm light in the windows. Shot 2: inside, a baker pulls croissants from the oven. Shot 3: close-up of her hands dusting flour on them. same warm light throughout, cozy

Veo 3.1 version (timestamps inside an 8 second clip):

[00:00-00:02] Wide static shot of a small bakery at dawn, warm golden light glowing from the windows onto a quiet cobblestone street.
[00:02-00:05] Medium shot inside the same bakery, a baker in a white apron pulls a tray of croissants from the oven, the same warm light.
[00:05-00:08] Close-up of the baker's hands dusting flour over the croissants, shallow depth of field.
SFX: oven door creaks open, a soft tap of the tray on the counter.
Ambient noise: quiet early-morning street.

Kling 3.0 version (custom multi-shot, more room per shot):

Shot 1, wide static shot, a small bakery at dawn, warm golden light spilling onto a cobblestone street.
Shot 2, medium shot inside the same bakery, a baker in a white apron pulls a tray of croissants from the oven, slow push-in.
Shot 3, close-up of the same baker's hands dusting flour over the croissants, same warm light, shallow depth of field.

Seedance 2.5 version (one continuous take instead of cuts):

One continuous take. The camera starts wide on a small bakery at dawn, warm light in the windows, then glides through the front door and past the counter to a baker in a white apron pulling croissants from the oven, ending in a close-up of her hands dusting flour over them. Soft golden morning light throughout. Oven door creak, quiet street ambience.

The “same bakery, same warm light” callbacks matter even more on these models than they did on Sora. For more on keeping people and places stable across shots, see the consistent characters guide.

What about Sora Cameos?

If you built a series around Sora’s cameo feature (putting a real person into generated scenes), the closest replacements are reference features: Kling 3.0 lets you bind a subject from 2 to 4 reference images or a video, Seedance takes image and video references through @ tags, and Veo 3.1 accepts up to three reference images on 8 second clips. None of these import a Sora cameo. You rebuild the character from your own photos. Only use likenesses you have permission to use.

Your Sora Migration Checklist

Run through this before September 24:

  1. Download your videos. API users: pull every file you want to keep now. App users: the export tool closed with the app on April 26. Check your email for any final export notice from OpenAI.
  2. Save your prompts. Copy every prompt you liked into one spreadsheet with columns for prompt, duration, aspect ratio, and notes on what worked. If your prompts only live in API logs or code, export them now.
  3. Find the winners. Mark your 10 best performing clips by views, not by how much you liked them. Those prompts get rewritten first.
  4. Re-test, don’t assume. Seeds do not carry over. A seed only means something inside the model that used it, so expect different results from the same text. The seeds and reproducibility guide explains how to lock results down again on the new model.
  5. Run each winner on two models. For most short-form creators, that means Veo 3.1 plus either Kling 3.0 or Seedance. Keep the model that wins for that content type.
  6. Rebuild recurring characters from reference images (see the cameo note above).
  7. Update your code. Search your codebase for sora-2, sora-2-pro, and the Videos API endpoints, and swap in your new provider before the calls start failing.
  8. Re-check durations. A 12 second Sora clip becomes an 8 second Veo clip plus an extension, or a single Kling or Seedance generation. Retime your edits.

If you want the model-by-model details, start with the Veo 3 prompt generator, the Kling AI prompt generator, the Seedance prompt generator, and the Hailuo AI prompt generator pages. The 6-part prompt formula is still the best base structure for all of them.

Where LzyPrompt Fits (Honestly)

The lesson from Sora is that the model you rely on can disappear with a few months’ notice. Your prompts should not be locked to it.

LzyPrompt is a model-agnostic prompt generator. You type a video idea in plain words (“dog protects owner from stranger”, “funny street interview”), optionally set Camera Style, Shot Type, Lighting, and Aesthetic, and it gives you 10 prompt variations. Each one has a scene title, a full prompt with camera style, setting, lighting, action beats, small imperfections, and sound cues, plus a ready-to-post caption. The output is plain text you paste into Veo, Kling, Seedance, Hailuo, or whatever comes next.

What it does not do: it doesn’t generate video, it has no model picker, and it doesn’t connect to any of these tools. What it does do is give you a prompt library you own. Export all 10 prompts to CSV, keep the CSV, and when the next model shuts down or a better one launches, your ideas move with you.

It costs $9 a month or $60 a year, with unlimited prompts. If you’re rebuilding a Sora workflow this week, try LzyPrompt free for 7 days and turn your old Sora ideas into fresh batches for the model you move to.

FAQ

Is Sora completely shut down?

The Sora app and website closed on April 26, 2026. The Sora API (the Videos API and the sora-2 and sora-2-pro models) is scheduled for removal on September 24, 2026. After that, OpenAI has no public Sora product.

Can I still download my old Sora videos?

App users could export until the April 26 shutdown. OpenAI said it would email users if it offers a final export window, and that data is permanently deleted after that. API users should download files before September 24.

What is the best free Sora alternative?

For Shorts creators, Gemini Omni Flash is free inside YouTube Shorts and YouTube Create. Kling has a free Basic tier and Dreamina gives daily free credits for Seedance. Free allowances change often, so check each one.

Which Sora alternative is closest to Sora 2?

For realistic clips with synced sound, Veo 3.1. For longer single generations and multi-shot scenes, Kling 3.0 or Seedance. Run your best Sora prompt on two of them and compare.

Do my Sora prompts work in other models?

Mostly, yes. They are plain text. You get better results by restructuring them: camera first and labeled audio for Veo, shot lists and Name (tone): line dialogue for Kling, @Image 1 references for Seedance, and bracketed camera commands for Hailuo.
